Egg donation is one way to help infertile women/couples to start a family. For women who are thinking about being egg donors, we urge you to learn more about SurroGenesis, including the specific procedures, criteria, and support for the donor and the birth mother. The benefits can be rewarding, both financially and emotionally.

Egg Donation

Egg donation is available to women who are unable to produce their own eggs. Couples may choose to have the donated egg implanted either into their female partner or may use a surrogate. In either case use the sperm from the male partner or a reputable sperm donor would be combined with the donor eggs to produce embryos. In all cases, the egg donor would be relinquishing all parental rights to the resulting embryos.

There are a number of reasons why a woman cannot produce their own eggs:

Some women have premature ovarian failure. This occurs when the woman prematurely goes into menopause. For example, if a 16 year old girl stops producing eggs, and doesn't have any menstrual periods, this would be considered premature ovarian failure. Another cause can be ovarian cancer or other ovarian problems, such as polycystic ovaries.

Age is also a factor in egg production. After a certain age, women start to produce fewer eggs, until menopause, when egg production is essentially over. With more mature women, the eggs are more difficult to fertilize. These are reasons why women who are approximately 45 or older would want to use an egg donor to increase their chances of having a baby.

Sex linked birth defects are another reason why couples may choose an egg donor. In some instances, the couple has had genetic testing and knows that there is a sex linked genetic problem that would be carried on the woman's egg. One example of this is Fragile "X" disease. This is the most common reason for severe mental retardation in males. This disease is carried on the "X" chromosome. Couples who know this may choose to have an egg donation to avoid this devastating birth defect.

Our program solicits the services of reputable egg donors between the ages of 21 and 35. They are screened by a physician for a number of diseases, such as HIV and Hepatitis. They are then given medications so that their cycles are synchronized with that of the recipient.
